Okay, I know, I'm getting on it a little late again. Bear with me, I've been feeling under the weather. But I still wanted to make sure I caught up on what's going on with our belly dance classes this past Friday.
In the Drills and Techniques for Tribal Belly Dance class we made a lot of progress. We did some serious drilling this week, with a heavy focus on arms. Not only did we have our usual arm drill by the fabulous Lauren, but we also went on to work on the arm movements used in our choreography segment. Next week we're going to be losing Lauren, since she's going off to see her favorite band in concert (good reason, right?) Instead I'll be stepping in. It's not going to be the same flavor as her drills, but we'll do the best we can in her absence. I'm sure we'll get by just fine!
Our ATS® class made me realize we've covered all of our beginning movements! We'll still have to constantly go back and review them, but we're making good progress. Since all the movements have been introduced at this point it means our task is to review, review, review. We've already started upping the ante on our dance practice. We played around with moving a standard style formation, moving the lead from the front of the room to the back of the room. We all agreed that we need to spend some more time working facing the back of the room, that way everyone can become a little more confident following along without the mirrors as a crutch.
It's great having mirrors in this space because it really allows dancers to see what they're doing and work on developing their technique, but it can make following so much easier, since you can easier watch what the other dancers are doing. That makes it easier to kind of cheat and follow along. Even in the Drills and Technique class we could use the benefit of doing the choreography facing away from the mirrors as our dancers become more confident, since that will really help them develop confidence in the choreography. It's definitely going to help strengthen our skills.
I'm really looking forward to the last four weeks of this session with both classes. The dancers have all made so much progress and it's wonderful to see them all learn and grow. I sometimes forget how new some of my dancers are, given how much they've developed in skill and technique already, or that some of these concepts like ATS® are so new to them. I'm constantly amazed at how much progress they're making and how much more confident they're becoming in their dance abilities. I can't wait to see what the future will bring!
