Off to a Great Start

It's only the second week of classes at the Greater Boston School of Dance and we're already off to a fantastic start. We've got all new music for each of the classes, with a few songs specifically chosen with my students' interests in mind. I had a few requests for songs we could dance to, and I was all too happy to throw in some special requests!

First, let me welcome you all to our new home for Friday night classes! While we were uncertain where we would land in the shuffle of new classes at the beginning of the class year we've found our home in the large studio room, everyone's favorite. We'll be here for the coming year through our Drills and Technique and ATS® classes!

Our Studio Space at Greater Boston School of Dance

This week in Drills and Techniques we really got into the first segment of our choreography. It may only be week two, but the first segment of our dance is already coming along so well! We paid special attention to those figure eights this week, working towards building strength and confidence with the movements. Our focus on grounded, tribal-style isolations is really paying off! I'm excited to see the rest of this choreography come together. With how great everyone is looking already, I'm sure it's going to be spectacular!

After Drills we jumped into ATS®. We're continuing to build on the base of level 1 movements everyone knows. We added a few new moves this week, including some favorite turns of mine. The hit of the night is always the improvisation segment at the end of the class. There was some exciting buzz about how fun it was to just relax and dance along with the movements. One student even mentioned how it was incredibly calming and zen. We all agreed this is our favorite part of belly dance, being able to dance together without having to learn complicated choreography or remember which step comes next. You simply dance, and it's wonderful.

The best moment of the night was hearing how unexpectedly easy improvisation is. Everyone thinks it's so incredibly difficult, and it's definitely intimidating the first time you've got to follow along, watching for the cues and movements, but dancers always seem to find it's not quite as hard as they feared it would be. I love that beautiful moment when they realize that they're doing it, and that it's so incredibly intuitive to follow along.

If you missed us this week, don't worry, you can still join us! Classes start at Keefe Tech this week on Tuesdays. ATS® and Drills and Technique will be ongoing and available as drop-in classes, or ask about options to prorate for the rest of the session! We look forward to seeing you in class!
