Zoe Jakes Workshop and Beats Antique

I know it's been nearly a week since I went to the workshop, but it's time to check in with everyone. I know I've had quite a few people ask me about the whole thing, and I've been super excited to share the experience.

Might I first say that the warm-up was awful (in the best kind of way!) I mean, seriously, the groans that went up from the crowd of dancers when she was showing us a new, harder way to do leg lifts. Wow, was that intense! But it was incredibly good and something I think I'll be adding in to my own practice routine. I know a lot of groans went up about the upper back stuff too, but I guess I have a strong upper back because that wasn't nearly as intense for me. However, it all did give me something to think about when it comes to how I utilize my body. This is something that's been happening a lot, so don't be surprised if I mention it again, and again, and again. Always learning!

The choreography wasn't super hard either, but it was really fun. I was told after the workshop that this isn't how she usually runs her workshops. There's generally a lot more explanation, so now I'm looking forward to the next time she's in town, if for no other reason than to see how her teaching style may have changed (and how much more prepared for the workshop I am!) I really enjoyed that part of the whole thing.

However, flutters? They still escape me. I know what the problem is now, so that's important! I apparently don't know how to relax my belly! It all comes clear! You know those moments in class or workshops where something suddenly hits and you're like, "Wow! Now I know what the problem is! Now how the heck do I fix it...?" That was that moment for me. It's really cool that I now know what I need to do, but I'm at a bit of a loss. I might have to do more research on this subject.

It was a full house that day! And so many wonderful people!

The whole experience was just so wonderful, even though I arrived late and was crazy stressed from the drive in. Can I just say how wonderful everyone was? And I seriously mean everyone I interacted with that entire workshop. Of course, it does't hurt that I ran into some people I was really excited to see, including friends I made at the Spanish Shawl workshop and someone I knew from the student show I was a part of last fall an since have been bumping into all over the place. It was, well, yeah, I think I can say it, as perfect as I wanted it to be,

Afterwards I met some lovely dancers for dinner and we talked about all kinds of things, the workshop, the dance community, and things we were excited about that were going on. I was thrilled to feel that connection again, something that had been lacking since I left Fort Hood and Austin, but I'm so glad to have found again.

The show was nothing short of wonderful. I have to say, if you can go see Beats Antique live, do it. Even without the belly dancers it would have been such a fun show, with great music and watching them perform their art. I loved seeing how it all came together live! Also, total bonus, belly dancers! Who wouldn't get excited about that? They put on a fantastic show and it was completely worth getting home so late and being so completely exhausted! I would do it again in a heartbeat!

That's not even mentioning all the people I spent my time with in the space. One of my students came out for the show. There were the fantastic GC dancers I'd met the weekend before. I got a chance to talk to some of the dancers from Eve out in the Worcester area. We might touch base about working on something exciting for the future!

The whole experience was nothing short of incredible. I'm so glad I went. It was worth every moment, even the city driving (which I honestly don't mind). It was such an amazing night! I can't wait to do it again!

When the opportunity comes up, you've got to grab a photo!

Okay, moment of honesty here, I hate this picture of me, but that's okay! Who wouldn't have limp, flat hair after a day of workshop and concert going? But I love that I was able to get a chance to grab a photo with her at the end, especially because my littlest was so excited to see a picture of Mommy with one of his favorite belly dancers! (Mommy is of course number one, and Rachel Brice comes in third.)

I am so glad I took a shot at being a part of this. I almost passed it up, and then I decided, "Live life to the fullest!" and that was that. Such an amazing opportunity!

I know I haven't said anything about the weekend workshops either, but I'll be talking about that soon. I've had a lot of information in the past couple of weeks to download and process, and I think to a certain degree I'm still on overload. But don't worry! The full report will be in soon! (And it's so great you'll definitely want to sign up for workshops next time this fantastic event rolls around!)
