Dreams of Wonderland and Amrah Qawiah

In case you missed it, this weekend was an amazing performance event. I can't even call it a belly dance event, because there were so many artists of various forms. That made it all the more wonderful and exciting. The theme? Alice in Wonderland.

As most of you know by now, I've been excited to perform with a wonderful group of dancers out of Worcester, Amrah Qawiah. This is where I take my weekly ATS(R) classes, and I've had such amazing fun with these dancers. They're really becoming a huge part of my dance family, my Worcester family, and I've enjoyed so many of the things we've worked on together.

However, none was as exciting as this piece. The vision was absolutely amazing, and it was so much more than traditional ATS(R). This was right up my alley, using dance to tell as story, one that I particularly like, as Alice in Wonderland is a favorite of mine. Before I say too much more, I want to let the work speak for itself.

This was, no lie, my favorite piece that I've done, perhaps ever. I love theatrical dance, and this definitely hit that love, and it was entirely improvisational! I mean, we had the story blocked out so we knew where people would be going, but the dancing? That was all on the spot improv, and let me tell you, it's not easy dancing in some of that stuff! A mask goes a long way to limiting your vision.

I honestly think this was one of the best shows I've been a part of. All of the performers did an amazing job interpreting the story and the theme. It was so much fun, straight through the show. I can't wait to see what Thalia (the wonderful hostess of this fine event) comes up with next!
