We've Finished the Shimmy Section!

Last night at Keefe we really made a lot of progress on the choreography. We only added three new moves, but we hit the landmark of finishing one entire section of the choreography! We're through what I've been calling "the shimmy section." This means we can move back into the comfort zone of the familiar repeat section, with a slight twist to keep it interesting.

As my new students learned last night, I like to add at least one challenge move to every choreography I do. The movement comes in two levels, one for beginner students, which is a simple, basic movement. The other is a more complicated move to challenge students that are a little more advanced. I find these movements are a fun way to show students exactly how much they've progressed through the course of their belly dance study.

Everyone did wonderfully well last night. I'm really impressed with how quickly everyone is picking this choreography up! We've only been meeting for a month and already everyone has the first segment of the choreography down. They know it so well I no longer have to call out the moves. I'm really proud of my students and how far they've come.

For the next two weeks we're going to be focusing on smoothing out the shimmy section so it becomes as intuitive as the rest of the choreography, and adding in the next repeat section of the piece. This will bring us right up to the halfway part of the class. It's hard to believe we've already made it so far! This piece is really coming right along.

Because we've been working so much on shimmies in class, I hope everyone continues to practice their shimmies during the off-time between classes. Simply practicing your shimmies every day makes such a difference in how strong and easily they come. Practicing along with the layering we do in class only helps to strengthen the ability to shimmy and move, which takes time to master comfortably.

As a reminder, the photographer is expected in class next week to take a photo for the Keefe at Night website. These pictures won't be used for wide distribution, just for the promotion of the class. What better way for everyone to see how fun it is than to actually have a picture of the class in progress? It will be great to show everyone just how much fun we're all having.

I'm really looking forward to the next two months of classes at Keefe. We're going to end it all off with our playful, renaissance faire inspired choreography, which I can't wait to see in practice. With how quickly everyone's picking it up, I'm sure it's going to look fantastic. The last couple months are going to be a blast!
